Vale Growers helping local school children eat their greens!

Vale Growers Bring Fresh Greens to Local Schools

Partnering with Food Sense Wales, Farming Connect Horticulture and the Big Fresh Catering Company, enthusiastic Vale Growers are helping to get more organic local vegetables on the menu of Schools in the Vale of Glamorgan.  Welsh Veg in Schools is a pilot project co-ordinated by Food Sense Wales that is seeking to re-design local supply chains to make them fairer and more resilient.

Currently only 6 % of vegetables served in Welsh schools are grown in Wales, the rest are imported. This project aims to reverse that trend by supporting agroecological farmers and give growers and farmers new or alternative income streams whilst in parallel connecting children with the food they are eating and how it is grown.

In 2024, 10 Vale schools including Ysgol St Baruc in Barry became part of the project with local growers involved from Bonvilston Edge.

In 2025 new Vale growers are joining the project, supplying in produce through Bishops and Big Fresh Catering to the Food and Fun in the Summer of 2025 and the late Summer and Autumn school menus of a growing number of schools in the Vale.
